Classes are arranged in year groups and children are placed in a particular class on the basis of age. Other things such as friendship groups and behaviour are taken into account. Our aim is to form classes that contain a good academic and social mix.
In Year 3, advice is received from the Infant School and we, in turn, help the secondary school to make decisions regarding composition.
In our Maths lessons children are placed in sets according to their ability. These are
very flexible. Children can be moved at any point during the term.
Assessments
We regularly assess your child’s progress in Reading, Reading Comprehension, Reading accurately with expression and fluency, Writing, Maths and Science.
Volunteer Reading
Many thanks to those of you who already help us to hear readers in class. If you are interested in this and have half an hour (or more!) each week that you could commit to on a regular basis, we would be very pleased to hear from you – just let your child’s class teacher or Mrs Bennett know, thankyou.
Interim Reports
In line with our assessment timetable, interim reports will again be issued at the end of this term. Children will be doing their on line (GOAL) assessments in February, so you will receive information on their Maths, Science and Reading Comprehension progress in addition to their Reading (fluency) and Writing results.
This should help you to see where your child is in relation to national standards and how s/he is progressing. The information on each report alters in line with the assessment timetable you have received. (We will send this out on the back of each report.) Some aspects of your child’s work will be assessed termly, others every 6 months. We hope this helps you to build up an accurate picture of your child’s progress and achievements.
It’s Good to be Green!
All children in school have a green card on display at the start of each day, and it’s good
to be green!
If your child has to be disciplined over one of our school rules then their green card will
be changed to an orange “Warning” card.
If they need to be disciplined a second time then their orange card will be changed to a
red “Consequence” card.
Consequences are linked to the children’s PPA afternoon. Each card (up to a maximum of
4 in a week) reduce their PPA time by 5 minutes. For instance, 2 red cards in a week
means that your child will lose 10 minutes of their PPA afternoon and have to sit working
during this time.
At the end of each day every child’s card will be turned back to green for a fresh start
the next day.
If you have any questions about this, please have a chat to your child’s class teacher.
PPA afternoon
This is the afternoon when your child’s class teacher is Preparing, Planning and Assessing your child’s work. For Year 3 this is Thursday, for Year 4 Wednesday, for Year 5 Monday and for Year 6 Tuesday. We have structured this time so that children are divided into three groups rather than two across each year group. One group will do guided reading & Espresso, a second will work in the Rainbow room with Mrs Curtis and the third will go to the Community centre with Mrs Marriott (now trained to coach gymnastics) alongside two other professional coaches to work in their gym. All children will participate in all three groups during the year.
Volunteer Reading
With finance from our school budget and support from Daventry District Council we will be using trained Volunteer Reading Help this term. Volunteers (all CRB checked and trained) work in school for 3 hours each week over the course of a year. If you are interested in training, please contact Christine Thomas on 07919457688 for more information or a chat.
Many thanks to those of you who have already volunteered to help us to hear readers in class. If you are interested in this and have half an hour (or more!) each week that you could commit to on a regular basis, we would be very pleased to hear from you – just let your child’s class teacher or Mrs Bennett know. Thank you.
Star System
We have decided to change our star system this year to make it fairer to all children. Stars and stickers for good work (i.e. where your child has tried their best) will be put at the end of the piece of work to which they relate. That way you will be able to look through their books at parents’ evening and see how much effort they are putting into their work.
Good behaviour will be rewarded through our new “Good to be Green” system.
If your child moves up a colour in their reading level we will let you know through the use of “Praise Padz – A Note Home”.
These changes have come about through comments made from parents last year, we hope it helps to provide you with more information about how your child is progressing.
If you have any other comments to improve home-school communication, please let us know.
Sports, Arts and French
Friday afternoons are now dedicated to Sports and French, changing to Arts and French when the weather is particularly poor. Your child will need warmer PE kit during the winter months as we will continue with sports unless it is actually raining hard. Any plain navy or black jogging bottoms will be fine with a warm top over their PE shirt. During these sessions children will be given the opportunity to participate in a wider variety of sports, varying according to the time of year, to include swimming, trampolining, athletics and the gymnastics facilities at the community centre.
